Here at Identity Music, we love hearing remixes!
Where would we be without the work of other inspiring musicians before us? Every artist, track and album - past and present - shapes the path for future musicians, and the songs we know and love today are often inspired by the work of preceding artists.
What is a Remix?
Remix - a variation/reinvention of an existing track by another artist to recreate the same song with different elements like genre and tempo.
Can I distribute remixes with Identity Music?
As long as you already have the required master licence and proof of express permission from the original artist, we are able to accommodate remixes.
A remix is a variant of an original recording and as such, it cannot be cleared through a mechanical licence because it is not a cover song.
What licences are required for remixes?
There are two types of licences that may be required to remix a track.
The licence you might need depends on what it is you are remixing.
The Master Recording (Usually held by the Artist)
concerns the instrumental elements of the track
The Song Copyright (Usually held by the publisher)
concerns the song writing, lyrics and vocals
If your remix contains just the instrumental sound recording, you would need the Master Recording Licence.
If your remix contains just the lyrics/vocals, you would need the Song Copyright Licence.
If your remix contains both of these elements, you would need to obtain both licences.
Can Identity Music procure and provide the required licences for remixes?
Not yet! Soon we’ll be able to take care of licensing for remixes for you as part of separate publishing deals but until then, this isn’t something we are able to provide.
Can my remix include stems of the original track?
Only official remixes, where you have a master licence, should include stems from the original track.
Are there any additional fees associated with distributing remixes?
No! At Identity Music, this is included as part of our agreements.
When distributing a remix, please follow the below formatting guidelines:
Remixes should NOT include the original performing artist in the track title or artist field.
Product Title (Version Title) | Product Main Artist | Track Title (Version Title) | Track Main Artist | Track Remixer |
DJ-Kicks: Kode9 | Kode9 | Closer Musik | Musik | Kode9 |
